Not every move in Toronto involves a full truck, a loading dock reservation, and a crew of five. Most moves in this city are smaller than that: a studio apartment in King West, a single piece of furniture that needs to go three floors up, a marketplace pickup that won't fit in an Uber. The problem is that most moving companies are built around the big job, which means smaller moves get deprioritized, overpriced, or handed off to whoever's available that day.

At Small Movers Canada, small moves in Toronto are the core of the model. Here's a breakdown of the six types of small moves we handle in Toronto, and what you can realistically expect each one to cost.

1. Furniture Moves

Sometimes you don't need to move a whole apartment. You just need that couch out of the living room, a dresser up four flights of stairs, or a bed frame disassembled and reassembled in a new unit across town.

Single-item and small furniture moves are one of the most common jobs we do in Toronto, especially in dense inner-city neighbourhoods like Leslieville, the Annex, and Roncesvalles, where tight staircases and narrow hallways make DIY moves more trouble than they're worth.

Our rate is $130/hour for two movers with a three-hour minimum. A straightforward furniture move, one or two pieces, no major complications, typically wraps up comfortably within that minimum window.

2. Condo & Apartment Moves

Studio and one-bedroom moves don't need a full truck or a five-person crew. They need two organized movers, a vehicle sized right for the job, and someone who understands how elevator bookings and loading zone logistics work in a Toronto high-rise.

Toronto has more condo units than virtually any other city in North America, and the moves tend to be fast when they're properly planned. Expect three to four hours for a well-packed one-bedroom, which puts the total cost in the $450–$600 range at our standard rate. A two-bedroom with more furniture can take five to six hours, depending on the floor, elevator access, and how much disassembly is involved.

If you're moving into or out of a building in CityPlace, Liberty Village, Yonge and Eglinton, or the waterfront, elevator

Booking is non-negotiable; confirm your window before you book anything else.

3. Small Loads

This covers the moves that don't fit neatly anywhere else: a few boxes from a storage locker, a single item picked up off Facebook Marketplace, a small haul from one side of the Distillery District to the other.

If it fits in a cargo van and doesn't need a full day, it's a small load move. These are practical, no-fuss jobs — and they shouldn't cost what a full residential move costs. The three-hour minimum still applies, but for most small load jobs in Toronto, that's more than enough time to get it done.

4. Senior Moves

Moving later in life, whether it's downsizing from a larger home in North York, transitioning to an assisted living facility, or relocating closer to family, requires a different kind of care. Less rushing, more communication, and movers who treat your belongings the way you'd want.

We specifically match senior moves with crews who understand that pace and patience matter as much as efficiency. If you're helping a parent or relative in Etobicoke, Scarborough, or midtown Toronto plan a downsizing move, this is exactly the type of job we're set up for.

5. Delivery & Hauling

You bought something large, an appliance, a piece of furniture, something off Kijiji, and it's not going to fit in your vehicle. A full moving company charges full moving rates. A courier service doesn't have the manpower to carry it up six floors.

We sit in the middle: two movers who can handle the heavy lifting at a rate that makes sense for a job that isn't a full move. Particularly useful in a city like Toronto, where parking is tight, buildings have strict loading access, and getting a large item through a condo lobby requires more than one person and a dolly.

6. Store Pickups

IKEA in North York or Etobicoke. A furniture shop in Yorkville. A lighting store in the Design District. If you've bought something that needs a truck and two sets of hands to get home safely, we can handle it.

Store pickup moves are typically fast: load it up, bring it home, and carry it in. Most jobs in this category come in right around the three-hour minimum, which makes them straightforward to budget for. If assembly is needed once it's in the door, let us know when you request a quote.

How to Figure Out What You Need

If you're not sure which category your move falls into, that's fine; most people aren't. The easiest way to get a clear answer is to describe what you've got: what's moving, where it's starting and where it's going, which floor you're on, and whether elevator access is confirmed.

You can get a quote for any of these move types through our Toronto moving services page. We'll ask a few quick questions, match you with the right local crew, and give you a real number before anyone commits to anything.

Whatever the job looks like, the approach is the same: two reliable movers, a fair hourly rate, and no surprises on the day.
