Not every move involves a full truck, a whole weekend, and a crew of four. Most small moves in Surrey are smaller than that — a single piece of furniture, a studio apartment, a marketplace pickup that won't fit in your car. The problem is that most moving companies are built around the full-service, full-truck job, which means smaller moves either get deprioritized, overpriced, or handed off to whoever's available.

At Small Movers Canada, small moves are the whole model. Here's a breakdown of the six types of small moves we handle in Surrey — and what you can realistically expect each one to cost. You can also read our last blog post on how much movers cost in Surrey.

1. Furniture Moves

Sometimes you don't need to move a whole home. You just need that couch out of the living room and into the new place across town. Or a dresser up two flights of stairs. Or a bed frame disassembled, moved, and put back together in a new bedroom.

Single-item and small furniture moves are among the most common small moves in Surrey we do — especially in dense areas like Guildford and Whalley, where elevator logistics and tight hallways make DIY moves more frustrating than they're worth.

Our rate is $130/hour for two movers, with a three-hour minimum. A straightforward furniture move — one or two pieces, no major complications — typically wraps up in that minimum window.

2. Condo & Apartment Moves

Studio and one-bedroom moves don't need a full truck or a five-person crew. They need two organized movers, a vehicle the right size for the job, and a clear plan for elevator booking and parking.

Surrey has a lot of this type of housing — particularly in South Surrey and along the King George corridor — and the moves tend to be fast when properly planned. Expect three to four hours for a well-packed one-bedroom, which puts the cost in the $390–$520 range at our standard rate.

If you're coming out of a two-bedroom, it usually pushes into five or six hours, depending on how much furniture you have and whether stairs are involved.

3. Small Loads

This category covers the moves that don't fit neatly anywhere else: a few boxes from a storage unit, a single item picked up off Facebook Marketplace, a small haul from one side of Newton to the other.

If it fits in a cargo van and doesn't require a full day, it's a small load move. These are practical, no-fuss jobs — and they shouldn't cost what a full residential move costs. The three-hour minimum still applies, but for most small load jobs that's plenty of time.

4. Senior Moves

Moving later in life — whether it's downsizing, transitioning to assisted living, or relocating closer to family — requires a different kind of care. Less rushing, more communication, and movers who treat your belongings the way you'd want them treated.

We specifically match senior moves with crews who understand that pace and patience matter as much as efficiency. If you're helping a parent or relative in Cloverdale or South Surrey plan a downsizing move, this is exactly the type of job we're set up for.

5. Delivery & Hauling

You bought something large — an appliance, a piece of furniture, something off Craigslist — and it's not going to fit in your vehicle. A full moving company will charge you full moving rates. A delivery service may not have the manpower to carry it upstairs.

We sit in the middle: two movers who can handle the heavy lifting, at a rate that makes sense for a job that isn't a full move. This is a practical option for anyone in Surrey who needs a one-time haul without the overhead of booking a standard moving package.

6. Store Pickups

IKEA in Coquitlam. Costco in South Surrey. A local furniture shop in Guildford. If you've bought something that needs a truck and two sets of hands to get home, we can handle it.

Store pickup moves are usually fast — load it up, bring it home, carry it in. Most jobs in this category come in right around the three-hour minimum, which makes them predictable to budget for.

How to Figure Out What You Need

If you're not sure which category your move falls into, that's fine — most people aren't. The easiest thing to do is describe what you've got: what's moving, where it's going, what floor you're on, and whether there's elevator access.

You can get a quote for any of these move types through our Surrey small movers page. We'll ask a few quick questions and match you with the right crew for the job — no pressure, no obligation.

Whatever the move looks like, the goal is the same: two reliable movers, a fair hourly rate, and no surprises on the day.
